Sudden Joint Pain

August 12th, 2010 by

The onset of sudden joint pain can indicate many different things, so it is therefore important to take a long and careful look at all of the possibilities as to what it could be. The first explanation of this kind of pain is osteoarthritis, and it is a very common joint disorder that millions of people around the world experience. Although there is no known central cause of this condition, it is closely tied in with aging, however there are still genetic and chemical factors which play a part as well. The symptoms of this kind of condition usually appear in those who are middle-aged, and a majority of people who are upwards of 70 years old have them.

  • Experiencing this type of sudden pain in this area of the body could also mean that you are overworking your body with too much physical activity of some sort. If you have a job that involves constantly using your body and putting strain on the muscles and joints, then that could be one possibility. Those people who work in construction are more likely than others to have problems with sudden joint pain, although there are many other occupations where these type of sudden injuries are common.

  • Fracturing of the hip as a result of too much pressure placed on the bone can lead to a sudden feeling of pain in this area as well. If the bone punctures through the skin and it visible, then it is said to be a compound fracture, a very serious injury that must be dealt with right away. Leaving it untreated you risk infection and much more serious health problems as a result. These kind of fractures can result from anything like a car accident, falling from a great height, or repeated physical activity such as running. Even though this type of exercise is good for you, putting too much pressure on the muscles and joints can result in pain.

  • If your sudden joint pain still seems like a mystery, then you will also want to consider the possibility of tendonitis. It is essentially an inflammation or swelling of a tendon in the body. Your tendons make up the connection between the muscle and bone of your body. This condition can result from either minor or severe injuries, over-stimulation, or simply aging. Along with old age comes many unpleasant health problems, including arthritis and the wearing away of tendons, bone, and muscle. All of these things can cause a sudden pain in the joints.

  • Although it usually sets in over time and from an early age, rheumatoid arthritis is another reason you may be feeling pain in your joints. It is a condition which lasts for years and causes the joints to become inflamed as well as the tissues that surround the area. While it is a bit more rare, the organs in the body can also be effected by this type of inflammation. Although doctors and scientists alike do not have an official cause of rheumatoid arthritis figured out, there are theories that involve genetics and certain environmental factors as well.

  • Lupus, an autoimmune disease, could also be the culprit of your sudden joint pain. This is basically a condition where the body’s immune system begins to fight itself instead of outside infections like it should. The immune system begins to blur the lines between healthy types of substances and unhealthy ones, so the ability to fight off bacteria and toxins is extremely limited. Although it is considered to be a fairly rare condition, it is still a possibility that you may want to consider. It is best to get an official diagnosis from a physician who is licensed and can give you treatment options for whatever you may have that is causing this pain to occur.
