Back Pain

September 24th, 2010 by

Back pain is easily one of the most common issues that adults will deal with, especially those who are older. Most adults, in their lifetime, will suffer from some sort of back pain issue. Whether it be upper back or lower back, back pain problems cause a host of issues for the sufferer. Some people simply have trouble getting up and moving around with a sore back, while others are completely bedridden with pain.

There is a complete wealth of information to take in when considering back pain. You need to think about what can aggravate back issues, who is prone to having back issues, and what can be done to resolve those back issues. The more information that you can get about back pain, the more you can do to avoid or treat back pain.

Who is Prone to Back Pain?

  • There are specific factors that can make someone more prone to back pain. Those who are looking to avoid back pain should avoid many of these activities, as should those who are already suffering from the back pain. There are some people who are obviously at risk, including those who perform strenuous work on a regular basis –such as movers and lifters. Athletes are also at high-risk for back pain.
  • There are other factors that many may not consider when thinking about those who are at risk. Anyone who smokes will but themselves at a great risk for back pain. Individuals who are considered overweight or “obese” are also considered to be at greater risk. Anyone who is both mentally and physically stressed is also at greater risk for back pain.

Causes of Back Pain

  • There are plenty of different causes of back pain, with each providing a slightly different problem or issue. Many people will strain their back, simply putting sudden stress on the muscles in the back. Strains often come from those who perform athletic activities or those who lift heavy materials. Anything resembling a sudden movement, such as quickly turning or quickly getting up, can also cause some sort of back strain.
  • There are some more serious causes of back pain, which can include osteoporosis, arthritis, and bulging discs. These generally require a higher level of treatment, which may sometimes include surgery.

Symptoms of Back Pain

  • While there are a lot of different pains that can come from the back, there are only a few symptoms that are actually designated as “back pain” symptoms. Those who are suffering from back pain will find that they have a completely limited range of motion in their back. This means that the individual will not be able to bend forward, backward, or sideways as they would usually be able to do.
  • These individuals will also find that they have pain that they would consider shooting or stabbing. This generally occurs when the individual moves in a way that tweaks the pained location. Some of the more general symptoms of back pain also include pain that shoots down the leg and general back muscle aches.
  • There are different stages of back pain, with each requiring a different level of treatment. Those who have old had back pain for a small amount of time are considered to hate “acute” back pain. This back pain is not chronic or permanent, and can often be fixed with simple home remedies and rest. Back pain that has been had for more than three days is considered to be more serious – a visit to the doctor is recommended.

Treatment for Back Pain

  • The first type of treatment that many with back pain turn to is medication. Anti-inflammatory and acetaminophen drugs are used to help remove pain and reduce inflammation. Those who are looking for home treatments can simply use over-the-counter medications. Those suffering from some more serious forms of back pain will often be prescribed prescription-level painkillers. Those suffering from serious pain are often given codeine or hydrocodone.
  • Injections offer yet another form of medication, albeit a form a medication applied in a more direct way. Injections are only used for those who are suffering from an incredible amount of pain. They are injected right into the location of the pain, helping to reduce pain and in some cases, completely numb the back.
  • Physical therapy is a serious option for those who are dealing with back pain. Some individuals are advised to start physical therapy while they still have the pain, while others are advised to do so once the pain subsides. Physical therapy uses movements, stretches, exercise, heat, and cold compress to help get the back into working order once again.
  • Surgery is a final option for those who are suffering from serious chronic back pain. The surgery is generally used for those who suffer from structural back issues, including bulging discs. Some individuals will have vertebrae completely fused together, while others will simply see part of their vertebrae disk removed.

If you are working to avoid back pain, or are suffering from back pain, speak with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to provide you with all of the information that you need to keep your body and back in a healthy state.
